The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is an Academy Award presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to recognize the best achievement in makeup and hairstyling in films. The award was first introduced in 1981 and has been presented every year since then.
The category is open to any film that features significant makeup or hairstyling elements, and nominations are decided based on a voting process among the members of the Academy's makeup and hairstyling branch, who are the only ones eligible to vote in this particular category.
Over the years, a number of iconic films have won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, including iconic films such as "The Godfather", "The Exorcist", "Amadeus", "Braveheart", "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "Mad Max: Fury Road".
In recent years, the category has been expanded to allow for up to five nominees, and there have been calls for even more recognition of the artistry involved in makeup and hairstyling to be acknowledged by the Academy.
